Safe Web Browsing Basics

Safe Web Browsing Basics

Learn fundamental habits to stay safe while browsing the internet.

Last updated: February 2026

Why Safe Browsing Matters

Every time you go online, you face invisible risks. Criminals create fake websites, trick you into downloading harmful software, and steal personal information. The good news: a few simple habits can protect you from most threats.

Keep Your Browser Updated

Your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari) regularly releases security updates. These updates fix holes that attackers exploit. Enable automatic updates so you always have the latest protection.

  • Chrome: updates automatically in the background
  • Firefox: click the menu, then Help, then About Firefox
  • Edge: updates with Windows Update

Look for HTTPS

When visiting any website, check the address bar for a padlock icon and "https://" at the start of the URL. This means your connection is encrypted. Never enter passwords or payment info on sites without HTTPS.

Important: HTTPS does not mean a site is trustworthy. It only means your connection is encrypted. Scam sites can have HTTPS too.

Think Before You Click

Links in emails, texts, and social media posts are the most common way attackers trick people. Before clicking:

  • Hover over the link to see the real destination
  • Check if the sender is someone you trust
  • If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is
  • When in doubt, go directly to the website by typing the address yourself

Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Weak passwords make it easy for attackers to break into your accounts. Use a password manager to create and store strong, unique passwords for every site. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) whenever available.

Be Careful with Downloads

Only download software from official sources. Avoid clicking on ads that promise free software, movies, or games. These often contain malware.

Key Takeaways

  • Keep your browser and operating system updated
  • Look for HTTPS, but remember it does not guarantee safety
  • Hover over links before clicking
  • Use a password manager and enable 2FA
  • Download only from official, trusted sources
